The "Viadi" who almost travelled to China
It is said that when Marco Polo set off on his great journey eastward, he packed more than just maps and provisions. A craftsman friend from the Swiss Alps – far ahead of his time – gave him a backpack, made from robust materials and sewn using a technique that would remain indestructible for centuries to come.
Marco Polo is said to have smiled and said: "When I return home one day, it should look as if it has just come out of the workshop."
And indeed – the backpack accompanied him on dusty caravan routes, through rain in the mountains and heat in the desert. He witnessed negotiations with spice traders, nights under starry skies, and conversations with emperors.
In the end, Marco Polo returned to Venice – his backpack intact, bearing only a fine patina that told the story of his travels. Legend has it that the backpack remained in the family and was passed down from generation to generation.
Today's Viadi (Romansh for "journey") is a tribute to Marco Polo:
